The League of Northern Democrats (NLD) has received a significant boost with the endorsement of two former Chiefs of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Alwali Kazir and General Martin Luther Agwai (retired). This development is a testament to the growing support for the movement, which aims to address the numerous challenges facing the North and the country as a whole.

During a meeting at his residence in Abuja, General Kazir expressed his enthusiasm for the NLD, stating that it is a welcome initiative that deserves the support of all right-thinking individuals. He emphasized the importance of collective action, urging the League to “live up to its mission and not die away like many other organizations.” General Kazir also offered to provide intellectual inputs to strengthen the League’s position within the region’s political landscape.

In a separate occasion, General Agwai received a delegation of the NLD, led by Chairman Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, and pledged his support for the movement. Despite not being a politician, General Agwai expressed his commitment to standing by the League, citing the nobility of their intentions. He commended the group’s efforts and promised to help in their activities geared towards “returning us to the good old days of selfless service.”

The League of Northern Democrats was convened by Dr. Umar Ardo, an astute academic and politician, and recently launched in a meeting attended by critical Northern elites. The group has appointed Senator Ibrahim Shekarau as its pro tem Chairman and Hon. Emmanuel Jime as its Secretary, among other distinguished members from the region.

The NLD is a coalition of two critical groups within the northern elite, comprising individuals who have distinguished themselves in various sectors of public service, private enterprises, and other significant fields. The group aims to reposition the North to an advantageously political, economic, and strategic position within the Nigerian nation-state.

A historic summit is scheduled to take place in Kaduna in October this year, with Vice President Kashim Shettima expected to be in attendance. According to the Convener, the LND is a political movement with political objectives, but remains non-partisan, without any ethnic or religious affiliations or sentiments. The movement’s primary goal is to help the government tackle the numerous challenges undermining the northern states, including disunity, insecurity, poverty, illiteracy, destitution, unemployment, and the menace of drug addiction among youths.
