Abuja, Nigeria — September 26, 2024

The League of Northern Democrats (LND) has announced a significant organizational restructuring following a meeting held on September 25 at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja. Chaired by Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, the meeting confirmed new leadership positions, established key committees, and set an agenda aimed at addressing critical issues facing northern Nigeria.

Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, former Governor of Kano State, was formally confirmed as the substantive Chairman of the LND. Hon. Emmanuel Jime, former House of Representatives member from Benue State, was appointed Secretary. Together, they will lead the League in its mission to unify and empower the northern region.

To strengthen its leadership, the LND established a Standing Steering Committee, headed by Senator Ibrahim Ida (Wazirin Katsina), with Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Bio from Kwara State serving as Deputy Chairman. Additionally, five subcommittees have been created to address various aspects of the League’s activities:

  • Contact and Mobilization: Chaired by Dr. Ja’afar Bello Dambazau (Kano)
  • Programs Planning & Logistics: Chaired by Alhaji Danjuma Ibrahim (Sokoto)
  • Media & Publicity: Chaired by Dr. Ladan Salihu (Bauchi), who also serves as LND’s official spokesman
  • Intelligence & Security: Chaired by AVM Monday Morgan (Benue)
  • Events and Protocol: Chaired by Ambassador Mohammed Hassan (Borno)

The LND also announced the upcoming Northern Nigerian Summit, scheduled for November 12-13, 2024, in Kaduna. The summit will focus on promoting unity, security, and leadership in the North. The League intends to use the platform to address pressing regional challenges, including disunity, insecurity, and poverty, while crafting “northern solutions” to these issues.

In preparation for the summit, LND leadership will embark on a series of high-level consultative visits to engage influential stakeholders, including former presidents, traditional and religious leaders, business figures, and retired civilian and military officials, to secure their support and collaboration.

Through this restructuring and upcoming initiatives, the League of Northern Democrats aims to foster a unified and resilient northern Nigeria, capable of confronting the challenges and seizing the opportunities ahead.
